Tuberculosis of the Pharynx and Larynx may be secondary to tuberculosis lesion. elsewhere . in the body, especially the lung or a Primary affection from inhaled tubercle bacilli. The most¢¥ authorities agree that the former is the usual method and that the latter is very rare. The incidence of tuberculosis has been greatly reduced with chemotherapy, although it has not been eradicated.
Ten cases of laryngeal tuberculosis 4 cases of pharyngeal tuberculosis, pathologically confirmed, were observed at Chung Nam National University Hospital during the period between Jan. 1975 and Sept. 1976. It formed 0.34% of out patients at department of otolaryngology during the period
Eleven cases were male and were elderly adult over the age of hoarseness; odynophagia, dysphagia and cold sweating, and 4 cases had symptoms. more than 6 months. Rentgenographic examination revealed pulmonary tuberculosis in all of the cases and 12 cases had far advanced or moderately advanced pulmonary tuberculosis. The regional incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis was in order of the vocal cord, the arytenoid region and the false vocal cord and all of the lesions in the pharynx were on the palatine tonsils.
Clinical findings showed ulceration, swelling with ulceration, or nodular mass with ulceration.
